The UK electric taxi grant 2025 has been confirmed. The government announced an impressive £120 million investment to support taxi drivers, businesses, and van operators across Britain in adopting electric vehicles. Now could be the ideal time for drivers and businesses to embrace electric vehicles (EVs), benefiting from considerable financial savings and contributing to environmental sustainability.
Extended Financial Support
Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood has confirmed that the Plug-in Grant will continue through 2025 as part of a broader initiative to encourage cleaner transportation. Businesses and drivers can receive grants of up to £2,500 when purchasing small vans weighing up to 2.5 tonnes or as much as £5,000 for larger electric vans up to 4.25 tonnes.
To date, over 80,000 electric vans have been purchased through the scheme. This continued support not only helps lower operational costs but also contributes significantly to environmental sustainability.
Simpler Transition with Reduced Red Tape
In a welcome move to streamline the switch, the government has scrapped the additional training requirement previously mandated only for electric vans despite their weight. Removing this extra hurdle means companies can more easily recruit drivers without worrying about costly and unnecessary training, making electric vans a viable, hassle-free choice.
Enhanced Support for Electric Taxis and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles
Taxi drivers haven’t been left behind, either. The government has reaffirmed a grant of up to £4,000 for iconic black taxi cabs and other zero-emission taxi models until 2025, with the aim of making the switch to electric more attractive. This initiative aims to generate cleaner journeys and greater comfort for passengers, benefiting drivers and their communities.
Additionally, wheelchair-accessible electric vehicle grants have received a significant boost—the grant cap increased from £35,000 to £50,000. This expanded funding provides disabled individuals with greater vehicle choice and improved accessibility, ensuring they can travel comfortably and with greater independence.

Ongoing Commitment to Electric Infrastructure
The UK’s EV charging infrastructure is growing rapidly, with over 74,000 public charging points in place. In 2024 alone, nearly 20,000 new chargers were installed. With an additional £200 million dedicated to infrastructure improvements in the latest budget, the network will continue expanding rapidly in 2025.
Private investment of around £6 billion is also set to significantly boost the UK’s charging infrastructure, giving electric vehicle owners the confidence that they are never too far from a charger.
Why Now is the Perfect Time to Go Electric
More people than ever are switching to electric cars and vans, with electric car sales rising by over 20% in 2024 alone—totalling over 382,000 vehicles. Financial incentives remain strong, including significant savings in fuel costs, with drivers saving up to £750 annually compared to petrol vehicles, especially when charging primarily at home.
Electric cars’ range anxiety is diminishing, too, with new models now averaging around 236 miles per charge—ample for most UK drivers and equivalent to approximately two weeks’ worth of daily driving. Electric vehicles are also significantly better for the environment, producing just a third of the lifetime greenhouse gas emissions compared to petrol.
The government’s strategic approach, including maintaining attractive company car tax incentives for zero-emission vehicles, further underlines its commitment to a greener, economically sustainable future.
Whether you’re a business owner looking to reduce fleet running costs, a taxi driver seeking comfort and economy, or an individual requiring enhanced accessibility, the latest round of UK EV grants offers excellent opportunities to move to electric.
