UK Electric Vehicle Economy Infograph

The mainstream media seem fixated on doom and gloom. When it comes to EV’s and the UK motor trade a lot clearly still needs to be achieved. However there are plenty of positive announcements being made by manufacturers at the moment.

Plans have recently been submitted for a new electric vehicle battery gigafactory at Coventry Airport. It is expected to generate 6,000 jobs in the UK. The car battery plant has been described as ‘mission critical’ for the West Midlands motor trade economy by Birmingham Mayor Andy Street. Local government revealed its negotiating with established battery and car makers to implement the ambitious plans. They believe the development would potentially stimulate a total investment in the region of £2 billion.

This news follows Nissan’s committing £432m to create a new “Gigafactory” in Sunderland and Stellantis announcing significant investment in electric vehicle production at their Ellesmere Port factory.

Stellantis confirmed that it has secured the future of its Ellesmere Port as electric van factory. An investment of £100 million will enable the production of small commercial EVs rather than the Astra models it currently outputs. Batteries will be shipped from plants abroad and fitted to Citroën e-Berlingo, Peugeot e-Partner and Vauxhall Combo-e commercial vans as well as their MPV equivalents.

The Coventry Airport gigafactory would be a joint venture with Coventry City Council to develop the site. Planning for a 5.7m sq ft Gigafactory has been applied for. The battery production site would potentially generate 4,500 jobs directly in the West Midlands and 1,000s more across the motor trade supply chain.
