Mercedes-Benz are set to officially launch their new zero-emission MPV, the Concept EVQ, in September, ahead of a UK launch in 2021.

The vehicle has all the functionality and capabilities needed to succeed, combining an emissions-free drive with the room and comfort required by today’s drivers and passengers. The new Mercedes-Benz EQV will be on display at the IAA on 12-22 September in Frankfurt, Germany.

Impressive range and fast charging

Drivers will be impressed by the range of the EQV, which can run for up to 252 miles (405 kilometres) before being recharged – though it’s worth noting these are only provisional figures provided by Mercedes at this stage.

And when the vehicle does finally need a boost, possibly its greatest feature is that the extremely high-voltage battery can go from 10%-80% charge in under an hour. The 90kWh lithium ion battery pack is stored under the floor in order to maximise space.

There’s plenty of room in the EQV, which can accommodate up to eight passengers. All of this is supplemented by the its slick, modern look and feel, and the latest technology to ensure a smooth drive.

Marcus Breitschwerdt, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, said: “Our vehicles meet the highest standards in terms of functionality and variability. The EQV also does not compromise in this respect. It offers comfortable handling, dynamic electro-aesthetics, intuitive operation and generous space – and all locally emissions-free. This means that it offers all of the typical qualities of the brand and segment that our customers expect, whether as a family car or a shuttle vehicle with a lounge-like character”.

How much will it cost?

There is a downside, though: a price-tag expected to begin at £60,000 for a non-modified version. This makes it more expensive than the LEVC TX or the Nissan Dynamo, and it is unclear whether the conversion to a wheelchair accessible vehicle will require an additional expense.

Though undoubtedly a premium offering, modern, comfortable and efficient, is the EQV coming at a cost that professional drivers can afford? We can’t answer that, but what we do know is that it looks like the EQV could be a great replacement to a traditional Vito or hackney carriage, with part of the additional purchase expense to be offset by the lower running costs. Its versatility could also make it appeal to black cabs, private and executive hire drivers as well as chauffeurs.
