Grossglockner High Alpine Road, Austrian Alps
(8,215 feet or 2,504 metres at the top)
This is the highest surfaced mountain pass in Austria and takes its name from the famous adjacent mountain. The pass, 48 km (approximately 30 miles) in length, and completed in 1935, links Fusch-Ferleiten (in the state of Salzburg), at its southern end; with Heilingenblut (in Carinthia). On the way its snaking route passes close to the borders with Germany, Italy and Slovenia.
This is a well-surfaced toll road (day tickets EUR 35.50 for a conventional car and EUR 25.50 for a motorcycle or electric car) and was built as a scenic drive. On leaving the toll booth drivers are presented with an information folder which contains a wealth of information about the pass and areas to explore along the way.
Note: Some sections lack guard rails; take care!
The road is closed each year from late October/early November to late April/early May.
VERDICT:
It is wider and safer than many mountain passes, but still an exciting drive. Don’t miss it!
